Woodsmoke and roasting chestnuts in the Eixample: on 14 and 15 November, What the Foc!, Barcelona’s barbecue festival, holds its 6th edition and its first in autumn. It also moves for the first time to the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm. Six chefs cook over fire only right in front of you, with Viladrau chestnuts, live blues, table football and shared tables. Entry is free.
It is one of those free things to do in Barcelona where you only pay for what you eat, and it works just as well with friends as with family.
What is it? A barbecue festival with six chefs, more than 16 meat and vegetable dishes cooked over fire, music and games, organised by Eat Street.
Why go? You watch real fire cooking (no gas allowed), eat seasonal produce and spend the afternoon in the courtyard of a historic factory.

According to the organisers, together they cook more than 16 dishes of meat and vegetables, with no gas at all.
- Casa Xica (Marc Santamaria and Raquel Blasco): Cantonese-style lacquered chicken wings, Iberian butifarra sausage with crispy kimchi and roast sweet potato with tare.

Chestnuts, music and games
- Fire-roasted chestnuts: the Castanya de Viladrau team roasts them on Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 19:00. There are no calçots this edition: the seasonal star is the chestnut.

My tips
- If you go as a group, arrive early to get a table: they cannot be booked.
- For an afternoon snack, note the chestnut hours, 15:00 to 19:00. If you missed the Castanyada, this is your second chance.
