You can enjoy Barcelona a lot without spending a cent. These are my free things to do in Barcelona, grouped by type, with the times for the museums that have a free slot. All the places are on the Mapa Inspira.
The basics
- Museums
- free on the first Sunday of every month, and many also one afternoon a week
- Careful
- you need to book the Picasso in advance on its website
- Views
- free at the Bunkers del Carmel and on the MNAC steps
For what’s on today and this weekend, have a look at my things to do in Barcelona.
Free museums and their free slots
- Museu Picasso. Free on Thursdays from 16:00 to 19:00 and on the first Sunday of every month, if you book in advance on its website.
- MNAC. Free on Saturdays from 15:00 to 20:00 and on the first Sunday of the month.
- MACBA. Free on Saturdays from 16:00.
- MUHBA, Museu Frederic Marès, Museu del Disseny and Museu Blau. Free on Sundays from 15:00 to 20:00 and on the first Sunday of the month. The Museu Blau is also free for under-16s.
- Museu de la Reial Acadèmia de Belles Arts. Always free, on the first floor of the Llotja. It only opens on weekday mornings.
- La Virreina Centre. A centre for the image on the Rambla, with free exhibitions.
All the free slots, museum by museum, are in the free museums in Barcelona.
History and architecture without paying to get in
- El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria. The old Born market, from 1876, with the streets of 1714 Barcelona underneath. You walk above them without paying.
- The Gothic hall of the Biblioteca de Catalunya. From the entrance hall, at carrer de l’Hospital, 56, you can see the hall of the old hospital.
- Passatge de la Pau and the courtyard of the Casa de l’Ardiaca. Two hidden corners of the Gòtic, a few minutes’ walk apart.
- Plaça Reial. With palm trees, the Three Graces fountain and lampposts designed by a very young Gaudí.
Free viewpoints
- Bunkers del Carmel. The most famous view in Barcelona, best at sunset. Check the closing time in my viewpoints for watching the sunset.
- Mirador del MNAC. From the top of the steps of the Palau Nacional, you have the whole city in front of you.
- Mirador del Migdia. Montjuïc’s secret viewpoint, with hardly any tourists and views of the sea.
- A rooftop with no entry fee. The 360° at the Barceló Raval, at Rambla del Raval, 17, doesn’t charge for entry. You’ll find it with the others in my terraces with views.
Free traditions and shows
- A castellers rehearsal. There are eight colles in Barcelona and their weekday rehearsals are open and free. When and where, in where to see castells in Barcelona.
- Font Màgica de Montjuïc. Water, light and music at nightfall. The days change with the season, so check them before you go.
Nature without leaving Barcelona
- Pantà de Vallvidrera. A 19th-century reservoir in Collserola. FGC (S1 or S2) to Baixador de Vallvidrera and a 15-minute walk through the woods.
At Christmas
- The lights and the Fira de Santa Llúcia. The Christmas lights are switched on on Thursday 26 November 2026 and stay up until 6 January. The Fira de Santa Llúcia, in front of the cathedral, is free to enter. More ideas in my Christmas plans.
More plans by theme
- Different and little-known, my unusual things to do in Barcelona.
- With little ones, Barcelona with kids, with what’s free and what’s worth paying for.
- And all my things to do in Barcelona, with what’s on today and this weekend.
