This Christmas you can walk inside The Little Prince. From 19 November to 10 January, Els Llums de Sant Pau premieres in Barcelona the official light and immersive experience of Saint-Exupéry’s book, with projection mapping on the Art Nouveau stone, live characters and, after several years without one, an ice rink.

It’s one of the big events of the season, and you’ll find it with everything else in my Christmas things to do in Barcelona.

What is it? A 19-stop evening route through the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, inspired by The Little Prince.

Why go? It’s a world premiere, and the setting is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau complexes in the city.

What you’ll see

The route has 19 stops, from the mapping on the main façade to the farewell, and takes you past the characters of the book: the king, the conceited man, the drunkard, the businessman, the lamplighter, the geographer, the rose, the baobabs and the aviator.

  • Large-scale projection mapping on the Art Nouveau pavilions.
  • Interactive light and music installations and lanterns, large hand-painted light sculptures.
  • Live characters and a little puppet theatre.
  • Explorer’s passport with stamps hidden along the way, perfect for kids.
  • Narration in Spanish, Catalan, English and French.
  • Ice rink, food and drink, and an official shop.

Getting there

The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site is in Guinardó, at the end of Avinguda de Gaudí, which links it to the Sagrada Família. If it’s your first time in the city, see also Barcelona in 3 days.

  • Metro: L5 Sant Pau | Dos de Maig or L4 Guinardó | Hospital de Sant Pau.
  • Bus: 19, 20, 45, 47, 50, 51, 92, 117, 192 and H8.

My tips

  • Go on a Prince Day if you can: 26 November is also the day the Barcelona Christmas lights are switched on.
  • Wrap up warm: it’s an outdoor route at night. Rain doesn’t cancel it unless the weather puts safety at risk.
  • Leave at home scooters, bikes, suitcases and pets: animals aren’t allowed, except assistance dogs.
  • If you’re going with kids, there are more ideas in my guide to Barcelona with kids.
