Christmas in Barcelona 2026: lights, markets and shows

Christmas things to do in Barcelona 2026: lights switch-on on Passeig de Gràcia, Llums de Sant Pau, lights bus tour, Santa Llúcia fair, with dates and prices.

🇪🇸 Leer en español Llegeix-lo en català

This year Barcelona is European Capital of Christmas, and you will notice it on the streets: more than 130 kilometres of lights, the whole of the Paral·lel lit up for the first time and new plans that already have dates. The cover photo is me at the Christmas lights switch-on on Passeig de Gràcia, which for me is when Christmas really starts in the city.

This article is about the things to do: lights, markets, shows and concerts. What is open on each day of the holidays, the metro on New Year’s Eve and the public holidays are in Christmas in Barcelona: what’s open and dates.

A note on dates: as of 21 October, some plans already have 2026 dates and others don’t. Where they haven’t been published, I give the 2025 dates as a guide and say so. I’ll update this as soon as they come out.

The lights switch-on on Passeig de Gràcia

What is it? The show that switches on Barcelona’s Christmas lights all at once.

Why go? It’s free, it happens right on the street and it marks the start of Christmas in the city.

  • When2026 date not announced yet. In 2025 it was Saturday 22 November at 18:30
  • WherePasseig de Gràcia
  • PriceFree

Anita smiling on Passeig de Gràcia under a large light star and golden garlands on the night of the switch-on

The switch-on takes place on a Saturday in late November with a show on Passeig de Gràcia. In 2025 it lasted about 20 minutes, with a choir singing the Christmas carol “Un cor que batega”, and at the end the lights came on across the whole city. The 2026 date has not been announced yet.

What we do know is what this year’s lights will look like:

  • More than 130 kilometres of streets, with 255 arches and 272 light figures.
  • The Paral·lel is lit up end to end for the first time.
  • Lights return to La Rambla, Ronda de Sant Pere, Balmes and Plaça Urquinaona.
  • There are designer light installations on Rambla Prim and Passeig Maragall, with a poem in light.
  • The light “galets” return to 13 markets and Plaça de Sant Miquel.
  • More than 50 fountains across every district get a special design.

In 2025 the lights stayed on until 6 January: from 17:30 to 01:00 Sunday to Thursday, and until 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eves of holidays.

My tip: get there early, because Passeig de Gràcia fills up, and stay afterwards to walk under the freshly lit streets.

Els Llums de Sant Pau, this year with The Little Prince

What is it? A Christmas light trail through the Modernista pavilions of the old Sant Pau hospital.

Why go? This year it is inspired by The Little Prince and the ice rink is back.

  • WhenFrom 19 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Closed on 24 and 31 December and 5 January
  • WhereRecinte Modernista de Sant Pau, Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 167 (metro Sant Pau | Dos de Maig)
  • PriceFrom €10 to €17.90; under-2s free
🎟️ Buy tickets

Els Llums de Sant Pau turns the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau into a night-time walk of lights. This year’s theme is The Little Prince, with projection mapping on the pavilions, interactive installations, actors, puppets and lanterns. And the ice rink is back.

The price depends on the day:

  • Príncep days (Monday to Thursday in November): €10 for everyone.
  • Reduced-rate days: €14.90 (€12.40 concession).
  • Standard-rate days: €17.90 (€15.40 concession).
  • Flexible ticket, to go on any day you like: €25.50.
  • The ice rink is paid separately: €6 for 20 minutes.

The 2026 opening hours have not been published yet; in 2025 it was open from 19:00 to 22:00. If you can, go on a Monday or Tuesday in November: it’s the cheapest ticket and it’s less crowded.

The Christmas lights bus tour

What is it? A night route on the Bus Turístic to see the Christmas lights sitting down and out of the cold.

Why go? In about 80 minutes you pass Passeig de Gràcia, the Sagrada Família, the Arc de Triomf and Casa Batlló.

  • WhenFrom 26 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, departures from 18:00 to 20:30. Not running on 24, 25 and 31 December or 1 January
  • WhereDeparts from Plaça de Catalunya, 1, at the Blue Route stop
  • PriceAdults €15; children 4 to 12 €10; under-4s free with a booking
🚌 Buy tickets

The Barcelona Christmas Tour is TMB’s tourist bus in a night-time version. The route takes about 80 minutes and has audio in English, Spanish or Catalan. You need to be at the stop 20 minutes before departure.

It’s a good plan with small children or for anyone who doesn’t want to walk much, and the best way to see the most brightly lit streets in one go.

The Fira de Santa Llúcia, in front of the cathedral

What is it? Barcelona’s oldest Christmas market, with nativity scenes, figures, moss, trees and crafts.

Why go? Walking around it is free, and there’s the giant tió for kids.

  • When2026 dates not announced yet. In 2025, from 28 November to 23 December, 10:00 to 21:00
  • WhereAvinguda de la Catedral, Gothic Quarter
  • PriceFree

The Fira de Santa Llúcia is set up every year around the cathedral, with more than 160 stalls of nativity scenes, figures, moss and trees and around thirty selling crafts and gifts. This is where people buy the tió and the caganer, the two most Catalan figures of Christmas.

For kids, the must-stop is the Tió Gegant: under-12s make it “poo” and take home a sweet. In 2025 it ran on December weekends and holidays from 11:00 to 13:30 and 16:30 to 19:30, and on several weekday afternoons.

Remember the fair closes on 23 December: if you come between Christmas and Kings’ Day, it’s gone.

The Fira de Nadal at the Sagrada Família

What is it? A Christmas market at the foot of the Sagrada Família, with trees, plants, nativity scenes, decorations, food and gifts.

Why go? It’s calmer than Santa Llúcia and you can combine it with seeing the basilica lit up.

  • When2026 dates not announced yet. In 2025, from 22 November to 23 December
  • WherePlaça de la Sagrada Família
  • PriceFree

It has been held since 1962 and began as an extension of Santa Llúcia. It has around a hundred stalls in four areas: trees and plants, nativity scenes and decorations, food and gifts.

Natalis, Christmas at Poble Espanyol

What is it? Poble Espanyol becomes a Christmas village with six themed worlds, workshops, shows and carols.

Why go? It’s one of the most complete plans for families, with letterboxes for Father Christmas and the Three Kings.

  • WhenWeekends and holidays from 29 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, 10:00 to 20:00
  • WherePoble Espanyol, Avinguda de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 13, Montjuïc
  • PriceAdults €13 online; children 4 to 12 €12; under-4s free
🎟️ Buy tickets

Natalis splits Poble Espanyol into six worlds: Wishland, Ilusionàrius, Tradicionàrius, Candyland, Elfland and Magic Fun, with illuminated streets, workshops and shows.

It opens on these days:

  • November: 29 and 30.
  • December: 6 to 8, 13 and 14, 20 to 24 and 27 to 29.
  • January: 2 to 5.

On 24 December and 5 January it closes at 14:00. At the box office tickets cost €2 more than online, and there are packs for 3 and 4 people.

Christmas at the port and ice rinks

In 2025, Port Vell had a free Christmas programme from 28 November to 6 January: a big wheel, an ice rink, night boat trips, visits to the schooner Santa Eulàlia (with a letterbox for the Three Kings) and a food fair on the Moll de la Fusta. The 2026 dates have not been published yet.

If you fancy skating, these were the 2025 ice rinks:

  • Recinte de Sant Pau, with Els Llums (already confirmed for 2026): €6 for 20 minutes.
  • Port Vell, on the Moll de la Fusta: €8.50 for 12 minutes.
  • L’Illa Diagonal: €8 per session.
  • Westfield La Maquinista: €12 for half an hour.
  • Tibidabo, with views over the whole city: included with park entry, or €5 for the rink only.

Lights in Plaça de Sant Jaume

Since 2024 there has been no nativity scene in Plaça de Sant Jaume. In 2025 the square had a light show projected onto the façades, “Simfonia d’estels”, and a 15-metre tree, from 22 November to 5 January, free. The city’s nativity scene was set up inside the City Hall, in the Pati de Carruatges, entered from Carrer de la Ciutat. Plans for 2026 haven’t been announced yet.

Christmas concerts at the Palau de la Música

The Palau de la Música Catalana already has dates for its Christmas programme:

ConcertWhenPrice
El pessebre, by Pau CasalsTuesday 15 December, 20:00€18 to €68
Handel’s Messiah, with the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik BerlinWednesday 16 December, 20:00€28 to €125
Messiah, with Vespres d’ArnadíSundays 3 and 10 January, 12:00€38 to €62

Even if you don’t go to a concert, the Palau at night, with its Modernista façade, is worth the walk.

A free garden of lights near Barcelona

The Jardí dels Somnis in Gavà, at Torre Lluc, about half an hour from Barcelona, is a free illuminated garden with limited capacity. In 2025 it opened from 28 November to 5 January, in the evenings from 17:30. The 2026 dates haven’t been announced yet. For more plans outside the city, I have the Christmas villages in Catalonia.

The Three Kings arrive by sea

On 5 January the Three Kings arrive by boat at Portal de la Pau, at the bottom of La Rambla, where the mayor gives them the key to the city. Then the parade sets off. In 2026 they arrived at 16:30 and the parade left Parc de la Ciutadella at 18:00, finishing near the Magic Fountain. The City Council will publish the 2027 route a few weeks beforehand. Everything about those days is in Christmas in Barcelona.
