The date is out: Barcelona’s Christmas lights are switched on on Thursday 26 November 2026. This year the city is European Capital of Christmas, and you can see it in the streets: more than 130 kilometres of lights, new designer pieces and the return of the giant galets.
The cover photo is mine, taken at last year’s switch-on on Passeig de Gràcia. For me, that’s the moment Christmas really starts in Barcelona.

The 2026 switch-on: Thursday 26 November
What is it? The show that switches on Barcelona’s Christmas lights all at once.
Why go? It’s free, it happens in the street and it’s the official start of Christmas in the city.
- WhenThursday 26 November 2026 (time to be confirmed)
- WhereFor the last three years, Passeig de Gràcia
- PriceFree
The date is Thursday 26 November. What’s still to be confirmed is the time and exact place of the show. For the last three years it was held on Passeig de Gràcia from 18:00, and when it finished the lights came on in every neighbourhood. I’ll update this article as soon as the City Council publishes the programme.

My tip for the day: get there early, because Passeig de Gràcia fills up, and take the metro (Passeig de Gràcia or Catalunya stations). When the show is over, stay for a walk under the freshly lit lights.
What’s new in the 2026 lights
According to the City Council, this year’s lights are the biggest yet:
- More than 130 kilometres of streets, with 255 arches and 272 light figures.
- New designer lights on Rambla de Prim and Passeig de Maragall.
- The giant galets of light, by Ramon Bigas, are back.
- More municipal markets light up their façades, and the Mercat de la Marina will show Christmas drawings by children from local schools.
- More than 50 fountains across every district get a special design.
The designer lights are spread out like this:
| Street or square | Design |
|---|---|
| Rambla de Prim (new) | Hey Studio |
| Passeig de Maragall (new) | Jordi Canudes and Ingrid Picanyol |
| Via Laietana | Ester Pujol and Marta Cerdà |
| Plaça de Catalunya | ARTEC Light Studio |
| Carrer d’Aragó | SMLXL |
| Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes | APO |
| Passeig de Sant Joan | Brosmind |
My walking route to see the lights
Start at Plaça de Catalunya, walk up Passeig de Gràcia, turn along Aragó towards Passeig de Sant Joan and head down to the Arc de Triomf. It’s a good hour on foot and takes in four of the designer pieces.
If you’d rather not walk, the Christmas lights bus (Barcelona Christmas Tour) leaves from Plaça de Catalunya from 26 November. I cover it, with prices, in my Christmas things to do in Barcelona.

More Christmas plans with lights
- Els Llums de Sant Pau, this year themed on The Little Prince and with an ice rink, from 19 November to 10 January.
- The Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas market, in front of the cathedral.
- The Christmas lights bus and Christmas concerts.
All of these, with dates and prices, are in my Christmas things to do in Barcelona. What’s open each day over the holidays is in Christmas in Barcelona, and for a trip out of the city, Catalonia’s Christmas villages.
