The Gran Teatre del Liceu, right on the Rambla, is Barcelona’s great opera house. If you have never been, it is more accessible than it looks. Here is how to plan it.

What’s on now
I Capuleti e i Montecchi, by Vincenzo Bellini, is the bel canto version of Romeo and Juliet. It is a perfect starter: the story is familiar and the music very melodic. On Friday 30, at 6:30 pm, there is a pre-show mindfulness session called “Respirar l’òpera”.
How to save on tickets
- Youth discounts: in other seasons the Liceu has offered reduced-price tickets for under-35s. Check whether there is an offer for this production.
- Cheapest seats: the upper levels and restricted-view seats. Look at the seating plan first to know what you will see from each.
- Buy early and check discounts and groups on the official website.
- Avoid resale sites and unofficial sellers.
Prices change by performance, so check the Liceu’s website.
What to wear
There is no strict dress code. Smart but comfortable is the norm: many guests go smart casual, and some dress up for opening nights.
Tips for your first time
- Arrive 30 minutes early: the building is beautiful and worth a stroll.
- Read the plot beforehand: there are surtitles, but it helps to know what happens.
- Switch off your phone: the acoustics are excellent and you hear everything.
- Book tapas or dinner nearby, in the Raval or the Gothic Quarter.
Visiting the Liceu without seeing an opera
Guided tours of the theatre (foyer, Hall of Mirrors and main auditorium) run in several languages. Check days and prices on the official website.
