Two women walked out of a studio on Passeig del Born ahead of me, both turning their wrists towards the light to check the chain caught it the same way. Matching bracelets, welded shut, done in the time it takes to drink a coffee.
That scene repeats across the old town every weekend. Six studios sit within walking distance of each other, prices run from 14 to 120 euros, and the cheapest metal survives the sea better than the expensive one.

The price gap between metals is far wider than the word jewellery suggests, and paying more buys you less durability rather than more.
Steel to solid gold multiplies the price eightfold, 14 € against 120 €. For a first bracelet I always start people on FLIPA’s steel and let them upgrade later, if they still want to.
The studio that guarantees its own welding
In the Gothic Quarter, at Carrer de la Comtessa de Sobradiel, 5. Marion and her team work in precision welding and are among the few who attach charms directly into the chain links almost invisibly.
According to the official Chez Paulette site, prices begin at 16 € for a bracelet and 20 € for an anklet or necklace, in gold or silver toned stainless steel, which means showers and seawater do nothing to them. Appointments run 10 to 15 minutes per person and one slot equals one person. Couples need two slots.
Walk-ins are welcome from midday to 7.45 pm, though they will not promise a waiting time. On a July Saturday that means eating first at one of the cheap places nearby.
Six studios, three neighbourhoods and booking policies that share nothing in common. This is what to sort out before turning up.

That 2,50 € Cielink charges comes straight off the bracelet price. With up to eight people per appointment, it is the one to call for a hen party.
The widest chain selection in the city
FLIPA, at Passeig del Born, 14. Their website lists over 70 chain styles and more than 280 charms to pick from.
FLIPA publishes prices from 14 € in steel, 20 € in sterling silver and 120 € in 9K gold. They open daily, 11 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 8 pm, no appointment. Clasps are available too, if you want the option of taking it off.
This is where I send anyone who arrives with no idea what they want, and El Born walks well when strung together with a vermouth stop afterwards.
Studios built for groups and hen parties
According to the official I Wear Dolls site, their Carrer del Rec, 22 bis shop stocks over 200 charm designs priced 1 to 8 euros each, and runs a queue system for walk-ins. Larger groups, hen parties and workshops go through their bookings address instead.
Pinky Promise, a short walk from Urquinaona metro at Carrer de Sant Pere Mitjà, 15, deep in the district rebuilt to look medieval, welds with a laser and runs pop-ups alongside the fixed studio. They hand out protective eyewear and place a leather shield between the chain and your skin during welding, which is exactly the right procedure.
Cielink works by appointment only, takes up to eight people per slot and offers ten chain designs. For a large group it is the one that guarantees nobody gets turned away.
The metal decides more than the studio does, and not in the direction the price suggests.

Steel 316L is both the cheap option and the durable one. Rare case where spending less is also the technically correct call.
Four places I would not get one done
Market stalls with no fixed workshop. They appear at fairs and pop-ups, weld, and move on. If the chain fails a fortnight later there is nobody to return to, and re-welding elsewhere runs 5 to 10 €. I would rather spend the same 14 € somewhere with an address.
Ultra-fine chains if you work with your hands. They photograph beautifully and catch on everything. Cooking, childcare, weights at the gym, go one gauge thicker.
Solid gold as a first bracelet. A hundred and twenty euros is a lot to spend finding out whether you like wearing something you cannot remove. Test the idea on steel for one summer.
Anywhere that dodges the re-welding question. If they cannot tell you what happens when it has to come off, they have not thought it through. Ask before paying, not after.
What to sort out before they weld
Confirm the re-welding policy. Chez Paulette offers a guarantee and repairs; others bill for it. That is the difference between a piece that lasts years and one that lasts months.
Count one slot per person. The classic booking error for couples. Two people, two slots.
Go on a weekday morning. The Born studios fill up on Saturday afternoons when the whole neighbourhood does. Tuesday at midday is empty.
Chez Paulette states plainly that walk-ins come with no guaranteed waiting time. On a July Saturday that means standing around for forty minutes. On a Tuesday it means none.
Turn up with a bare wrist. Watches and other bracelets all come off anyway so they can measure the fit properly.
Then there is the question everyone actually wants answered, which is not whether it hurts.
Keep the chain if you ever cut it off. Re-welding runs 5 to 10 € against 14 € for a new one, and Chez Paulette covers it under their guarantee.
It outlasts any souvenir, which is the point of the whole thing.
Permanent means there is no clasp. That is the whole of the small print.

Can a permanent bracelet be removed
Yes. Small scissors cut through the connecting ring and it comes off without touching your wrist. Keep the chain and the studio welds it back on. Several places will also fit a clasp if you would rather take it off regularly, so permanent describes the missing clasp rather than a lifetime commitment.
What happens to a permanent bracelet during an MRI scan
Some medical and surgical procedures require removing all metal. Cut the connecting ring with fine scissors beforehand, keep the chain safe and have the studio re-weld it afterwards. Ask about that re-welding policy before you pay, because studios handle it differently and some charge for it.
Can you shower and swim with a permanent bracelet
Stainless steel 316L handles showers, chlorinated pools and seawater without tarnishing, and it is the toughest option despite costing the least. Sterling silver reacts more to salt and chlorine. If you swim daily, steel outperforms silver even though it costs six euros less.
